Samuel Cole Williams (1864-1947)

Biography and Accolades

Samuel Cole Williams was born in Gibson County, Tennessee. He received his degree from Vanderbilt University in Nashville in 1884. Professionally, he was a lawyer who worked in Johnson City, Tennessee, and he opened a bank there with the help of John D. Cox. Williams was an entrepreneur, owning portions of the Watauga Light and Power Company and Johnson City Transit Company.

In 1913 Williams was appointed to the Tennessee Supreme Court. In 1928 and 1938 he was appointed to codify the laws of the State of Tennessee. He also helped to establish the public library in Johnson City, which is named after his son, Mayne Williams.
