SPEECH ANATOMY
Dissecting the Parts of Speech

Introduction Task Sources Process Guidance Conclusion
People communicate every day in every way. In the American school system, most students communicate using the English language. Before we even begin attending school, we have learned to speak the language around us. In the perfect world of an English teacher, all her students have been exposed to and taught standard English. In the real world, we have learned to speak like those around us.
Every word in a sentence can be identified as a separate part of speech. The following web quest is designed to explain and dissect those words that become sentences.
The general purpose of this project is to remediate the eight (8) parts of speech. Students will use the web quest to review the parts of speech, take web-based quizzes, and do additional remediation, if necessary.

Guidance - Reflection
Purpose - Knowing how the English language is constructed is an important asset (and skill) for various reasons. Many students do not learn or comprehend the parts of speech until they attempt to learn a different language. The purpose of this product is to build and construct knowledge on the eight basic parts of speech. The web quest should demonstrate how words complement each other when used in sentences, writing, and speaking.
Statement - Prior to using this product, students will have spent the greater portion of their lives speaking and using the English language in their colloquial, home, or school setting. The will have also been introduced to basic internet usage and application. The web quest will be utilized as supplementary material to classroom instruction. It will also allow each student a chance to strengthen his knowledge of the parts of speech by reading the websites and completing the website quizzes.
Debriefing - The web quest will improve learning for those who need additional help. It allows them the opportunity to work alone and at their own pace. It also allows them the chance to work outside of the classroom and at times that are more convenient for them. The website quizzes provide immediate feedback and allow the student to determine where her weaknesses are. If additional help is needed, the student will be encouraged to seek help from peers, parents, and the teacher.
Description - This activity might be improved by including local links that relate to the students' interests. It could also be enhanced by narrowing the topic of study to a single part of speech. Lastly, the web quest could be used as a helper to the current text book. It could refer the student to specific assignments in the text and even provide answers.
In this project, students were able to hone or remediate their language skills and parts of speech knowledge. Students should be able to define and identify the eight (8) parts of speech and apply them in their own speech and writing.
