LECTURE SERIES WITH DR. CLIFF PARTEN

Dr. Parten's lecture series focused on different ways of looking at classical problems. The first topic was on the structure of systems in the matrix form. Graph Theory was another highlight of the series. The series were held every other Thursdays in EMCS 322 at 1:00 PM.

We surely enjoyed Dr. Parten's unique presentation in his own humorous style. Whether you are a EE or just another college student, you can enjoy a lecture even without understanding the subject clearly at first. Special Invitation to all campus LIBERTARIANS!

HORIZON: UTC ENGINEERING & SCIENCE FESTIVAL

For the first time on UTC campus the IEEE, ASCE, ASME, AIChE, ACS and Tau Beta Pi organized HORIZON! The Engineering and Science Festival featured exhibitions on projects built by different student groups, a colloquium for teachers teaching Science and Mathematics in High Schools and other miscellaneous activities. It was an educational, fun and rewarding experience for all who attend. More...

ANNUAL SPRING COOKOUT

The first "Annual Spring Cookout" was sponsored by the IEEE, ASCE and ASME. The event featured mouth watering hamburgers, succulent hot dogs, cold drinks, snacks, healthy vegetarian burgers, veggie hotdogs and friendly people all over the place. The event was scheduled in front of Grote building on Thursday 3rd of April 2003. A totally big hit event! All the donated goods were sold off!! The profit margin skyrocketed to more than 300%. Way to go Engineers! Click on the link to find out more about the event and some gorgeous photographs and a video clip! More...

SOUTHEAST CONFERENCE 2003 - OCHO RIOS, JAMAICAIEEE SOUTHEAST CONFERENCE 2003

Every year the IEEE has a conference for the southeastern United States. For 2003 the conference was held in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. The UTC Chapter of the IEEE takes deep interest in sending representatives to this annual conference. But due to some unavoidable circumstances our student representatives were unable to attend. But Dr. Eltom was present at the conference and returned to us with many new information.

The main benefits of going to a conference such as this are to gain exposure to leading professionals in the business, learn how presentations are made, and learn what is new, what is better and bring back the novelties to improve and enlighten the folks back at home base. More...

ACHATTANOOGA IEEE PROJECTTANOOGA IEEE PROJECT

The UTC IEEE members built three simple logic circuits for the main IEEE Chattanooga section. These are to be used by local area high school teachers. The three circuits are an OR gate, an AND gate and an XOR gate. Their external appearance looked the same so that students would have to analyze the functionality of the circuit to determine its hidden identity. These circuits could be easily built by purchasing parts from a local "Radio Shack" and "If It's Paper". Find out which one is which!

ROPER CORPORATION (GE CONSUMER PRODUCTS) TOUR

The IEEE toured the GE Appliances Roper Corporation facility on the 7th February 2003. Located in Lafayette, Georgia, the plant manufactures high end GE cooking ranges. The plant is reputed to be one of GE's most productive factories. The tour was conducted by Ken Johnson who is one of the Technical Support Engineers and also the Co-op Coordinator for the company. The tour gave students the opportunity to see entire processes from fabrication to the final finishing of well designed product manufactured for a competitive market. The facility is mostly automated with many stations that are custom built.

DOUGHNUT AND HOT CHOCOLATE SALE

This was the first attempt at raising money for the new 2002-2003 IEEE officers. In collaboration with the ASCE and the ASME, the IEEE organized "Doughnut and Hot Chocolate Sale" on Friday January 31st 2003. Located in the lobby of Grote building, the few volunteers opened shop eagerly. The sale slowly started at 9:00 am (ET) with 11 boxes of Krispy Kreme's glazed doughnuts (6 were donated by Krispy Kreme) and a container full of sweet hot chocolate.

As students got out of classes they started to line up for some warm breakfast-like snack on a cold winter morning. By noon most of the boxes were empty and the sale was going great. But just when the crowd seemed to die away, the fearless leader (Katherine-President) showed up to assist. She took a couple of boxes and went around selling it to people in other buildings. Being an experienced colporteur, she did a fantastic job of selling. One gentleman even bought a boxful and more.

This event was a wonderful experience for all who were present. At the end every single doughnut was sold out and there was not a drop of hot chocolate left. There were even a few who had to be turned away. The whole phenomenon of all the engineering students, staff and faculty coming together to support the event was a joyous moment in time.

PRESENTATIONS

Every semester the IEEE Student groups go out to engineering freshman classes and give a presentation about the IEEE and electrical engineering. For the 2002-2003 school year, the presentations were made on the 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th of October 2002 and January 30 2003. The presentations include a brief summary of what it is like to be an electrical engineer, what kind of jobs an electrical engineer does, and how does it all fit into being a part of the IEEE. Students are informed of the potential benefits of joining the organization and the dues required to be a part of the team.

OAK RIDGE NATIONAL LABORATORY TOUR

On Monday, October 14th 2002, the UTC IEEE Chapter made a trip to the ORNL in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The day was marked with a Federal holiday for TVA employees and Canadians eating turkey for their Thanksgiving meal. But our brave little group woke up bright and early to catch the school van that would take them to Oak Ridge. The students were accompanied by Dr. Kazemersky (Dean of Engineering) and Mr. Hugh Prevost (Director to Co-operative Education /Int'l Ed/Nat'l Student Exchange).

Some of the main features of the tour were the building of the Manhattan Project and simulated crash testing for carmaker Audi.
