Mentoring

In accordance with its goals, Urban IMPACT identifies and develops mentors and peer group leaders in the inner city schools in order to support novice teachers during their first three years of public teaching as well as preservice teachers. To achieve this objective, two Professional Development Schools in the inner city and two schools not classified as Professional Development Schools were chosen the summer 2000 to pilot the mentoring program. During the summer 2000, sixteen mentors and five administrators attended the training workshops that were provided to develop their mentoring skills and discuss the goals and objectives of the program. Throughout the fall 2000, the mentors will begin meeting and supporting the novice and preservice teachers in their schools. Once a month the mentors will promote peer group sessions comprised of teachers throughout the school that will meet to discuss issues and develop strategies to meet challenges that occur. Logs will be kept of the meeting topics and those who attended. One measurement of success will include a comparison of the retention rates of new teachers with that of the previous fall semester. A Model Support System will be developed for novice and preservice teachers based on the knowledge and experience gained from these four schools this next year.

Using the knowledge and insight gained from this semester, new strategies and processes will be implemented in the spring of 2001 and other inner city school mentors will be chosen to implement the Model Support System for novice and preservice teachers. Mentors from these new schools will attend a mentor training session during the summer of 2001. In addition, UTC and UTK will plan a Summer Institute 2001 for Urban Education for inservice, preservice and UTC/UTK faculty and deans dealing with the necessary knowledge, skills and strategies for effective urban teaching.
