James Adair (ca. 1709-1783)

Biography

An Irishman from County Antrim, Adair arrived in the Americas in 1735 or sometime before. He traded with the Catawbas and Cherokees until 1744, after which he established a relationship with the Chickasaws in Mississippi. He negotiated peace deals with the Native Americans and was known to them primarily as a diplomat. In 1769 he returned to the British Isles for a brief time. He later returned to the new world, he died in North Carolina in 1783.
