Biography
Adams was born in Beeville, Texas, in December, 1914. He attended the Texas College of Arts and Sciences as an undergraduate, but took his M.A. at the University of Texas and his Ph.D. at the University of Paris in 1953.
Adams briefly taught at Ohio State (1946-48) and Louisiana State (1966-70) but spent the bulk of his career at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. He was the a professor there from 1948-66 and head of the graduate studies department from 1970-80. In 1980 he became the Lindsay Young Professor of English, a position he held until his retirement to Professor Emeritus.
