William R. Anderson (b. 1921)

Biography

William Robert Anderson was born in Bakerville, Tennessee. He attended the U.S. Naval Academy and entered the Navy upon graduation. He entered the submarine service in 1942, achieving the rank of captain by the time of his retirement in 1962. He commanded the USS Nautilus, the world's first atomic-powered submarine, which was also the first vessel to cross the North Pole underneath the polar ice cap. He served as a U.S. Congressman from the state of Tennessee from 1964-72.
