James A. Autry (b. 1933)

Biography

James A. Autry was born on March 8, 1933, in Memphis, but grew up in Benton County, Mississippi. In 1955, he received a Bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Mississippi. Later, he was elected to the University of Mississippi Alumni Hall of Fame. Autry has been president of the Meredith Corporation's Magazine Group, a publisher for magazines such as Better Homes and Gardens, Ladies' Home Journal, and Successful Farming. In 1991 Autry retired from the magazine industry to pursue his career as a speaker and management consultant. Autry has also published two books of poetry. His first book, Nights Under a Tin Roof, was published in 1983, and it was followed by Life after Mississippi in 1989. Autry's nonfiction books focus on management and leadership skills that are more than the standard business school teachings. He uses his essays, poetry, and letters to relay the challenges faced by business managers.
