Anne Howard Bailey (b. 1924)

Biography

Anne Bailey was born in Memphis, where she lived until attending Southwestern University on scholarship. She excelled in school, in both academics and literary efforts, earning a place in the Who's Who in American Colleges and becoming the first freshman in school history to be awarded a Stylus cup for her writing.

Upon graduation, Bailey moved to New York where she wrote for the theater and television. In two years time she had over 200 credits as a television writer, working on such projects as a updated version of Macbeth and a drama of the lives of the Adams family of Massachusetts, entitled The Adams Chronicles. She also wrote the libretto for The Trial of Mary Lincoln, for which she recieved an Emmy in 1972. After a brief but unsuccessful sojourn in Hollywood, Bailey returned to New York where she continues to write for the small screen and has authored the librettos for many stage productions.
