Howard Henry Baker, Jr. (b. 1925)

Biography

Baker was the first popularly elected Republican senator from the state of Tennessee. He was born in Hamilton, Tennessee, and earned his LL.B. from the University of Tennessee in 1925. He was an U.S. senator from 1967-1985, during which time he served as Vice Chairman of the Senate Watergate Committee, Minority Leader (1977-1981), and Majority Leader (1981-85). He was the White House Chief of Staff from 1987-88 and is now the U.S. Ambassador to Japan.
