Biography
Charlotte Barr was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, in 1942, but grew up among the hills of Chattanooga, Tennessee. After high school, Barr joined the Dominican Order convent in Nashville, Tennessee. She began teaching elementary school and traveled to three different states teaching in four different schools. Returning to Nashville, she taught English at St. Cecilia Academy for ten years. Barr left the convent after thirty years and decided to teach at Webb School in Bell Buckle before coming back to Chattanooga to began teaching at the Baylor School.
Barr received her B.A. from Peabody College in 1969, and then enrolled at Memphis State University to pursue her Master's degree. She eventually completed her M.A., graduating from Providence College in 1983. She continued to write poetry throughout her stay in the convent, and her work first appeared in the Sewanee Review in 1976. Thirteen years later, she published her first volume of poetry--Sister-Woman (1989). Her most acclaimed volume of poetry, The Bell Buckle Years, was published in 1992.
Charlotte presently lives with her mother in Chattanooga and continues to write poetry.
