Alfred Scott Bates (b. 1923)

Biography

Bates was born in Evanston, Illinois, and earned his B.A. at Carleton College. He took his M.A. and Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin, then began teaching at the University of the South in 1954. In 1962 he began a long-term association with Highlander Folk School in Monteagle, Tennessee, which he continued, along with his teaching post, until his retirement.
