Richard Jackson (b. 1946)

Biography

Richard Jackson has taught literature and writing at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga since 1976. He is a UC Foundation Professor of English and frequently published poet. His first collection of poems, Part of the Story, was published by Grove Press in 1983. That same year, the University of Alabama Press published his Acts of Mind: Conversations with Contemporary Poets. Jackson has since written Alive All Day (1992), and published numerous poems in such journals as Prairie Schooner, the Georgia Review and Poetry. His many awards include the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, Fulbright, NEA and NEH fellowships, as well as four Pushcart Prizes. In May of 2000 he was awarded the Order of Freedom Award from the president of Slovenia for his contributions in the Balkans. He has also published two critical books and an anthology of Slovene poetry. Currently he is on the international PEN Sarajevo Committee and editor of The Poetry Miscellany. Jackson also directs the Meacham Writer's Workshop in Chattanooga.
