| We are the University
of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s Committee for Tsunami
Relief. |
| A group of students,
encouraged and advised by members of the faculty and staff,
came together at the start of the year to find a way of helping
the victims of the tsunami. |
| Beyond simply raising
money, we wanted to create a specific awareness of the issues
surrounding tsunami relief and reconstruction, and most importantly,
create a sense of community ownership, involvement and solidarity
amongst students at UTC and the people of the Greater Chattanooga
area in general. |
| We wanted not just to
contribute, but to contribute as a community of concerned
citizens to a fellow community of people in need. |
| The outcome of these
initial meetings was the UTC Committee for Tsunami Relief. |
 |
| To keep our focus specific,
and our aims clear, we picked a local Sri Lanka NGO, Sarvodaya,
to which we will contribute our funds. |
| We feel that this organization
is an acclaimed and effective organization that deserves and
needs our support. |
| Furthermore, our focus
on this NGO underscores the fact that reconstruction from
this disaster will take years, perhaps decades, and our resolve
and commitment to follow and assist in this long process should
not wane. |
| Our funds will be directed
towards orphans who need support for many years to come, highlighting
our focus of not just immediate relief but long-term development. |
| To this aim, we have
started the Blue String Campaign, and we hope you will join
us in our efforts to lend support to a community in need.
